Τα βραβεία Grammy καθιερώθηκαν το 1959, από την Εθνική Ακαδημία Ηχογραφημένων Τεχνών και Επιστημών και αρχικά ονομάζονταν “Gramophone Awards”.
Το βραβείο “Τραγούδι της Χρονιάς” είναι ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά έπαθλα μαζί με εκείνα των κατηγοριών “Καλύτερος Νέος Καλλιτέχνης”, “Δίσκος της Χρονιάς” και “Άλμπουμ της Χρονιάς”. Ξεκίνησε να απονέμεται από την 1η κιόλας τελετή καθιέρωσης των βραβείων.

Πάντα το συγκεκριμένο βραβείο απονέμεται με τα εξής τιμητικά λόγια: “Για να τιμηθεί η καλλιτεχνική απόδοση, η τεχνική αρτιότητα και η συνολική εξαιρετική εκτέλεση μέσα στην βιομηχανία της μουσικής, παραβλέποντας τις πωλήσεις δίσκων και τις θέσεις στα τσαρτς των επιτυχιών”.
