Lets go Athens

Pocket park – Kato Petralona

After intensive work, which lasted about a month, the sixth pocket park is available to residents and visitors of Athens, in Petralona. With the contribution of P&G and AB Vassilopoulos and the supervision of the Organization Earth, the Municipality of Athens restored another urban green area in this lively neighborhood, making the linear area of the pedestrian walkway, an area of 160 sq.m.,even more attractive with new flower beds.

The pocket park on the Dim.Pavlidispedestrian walkway was implemented within the framework of the “Adopt your city” program, reinforcing the constant efforts of the Municipality of Athens that began last summer to give more free space to Athenians, increase green areas and to improve the quality of life of its residents and visitors.

With an emphasis on bioclimatic design, and taking into account the pedestrian walkway use, the new sustainable pocket park was bordered with plantings in modern geometric patterns. New, tall and evergreen trees, suitable for the local microclimatic conditions, were planted along the walkway, offering natural shading for a more pleasant stay inside the parkfor visitors.

In total, 6 trees, 276 bushes and 200 plants were planted, upgrading the park’s aesthetics and ecosystem. Additionally, the urban equipment in the area was renewed with the installation of waste bins, recycling bins and special bins for recycling cigarette butts, while the lighting was also enhanced with the useof an autonomous photovoltaic system.

In the park, four different types of plants were planted that thrive in the shade, are resistant to atmospheric pollution and have foliage with different textures and colors, offering a beautiful look to the areathroughout the year. These are traditional plants that flourished in the courtyards of old Athens for more than a century and are re-introduced today in the urban environment, placed in modern arrangements in the park.
