Lets go Athens

PocketPark – Agios Artemios Gouva

The city’s 7th consecutive pocket park descended in AgiosArtemios, in a densely built-up neighborhood of Athens, also known as Gouva. With this park, the network of innovative bioclimatic green areas that aim to improve the quality of life in neighborhoods is expanding, offeringvital space to residents, thus restoring formerly abandoned spaces.

Following the donation of Nova – a member of the United Group, the Municipality of Athens, implementing the “Adopt Your City” program, is creating a small, yet important urban green area in AgiosArtemios. With the aim of having the first ten pocket parks completed by the end of the year, the newest intervention on Leagrou Street confirms the intensive effort of the municipal authorities to “green” the neighborhoods of Athens, making them open and accessible to both residents and visitors.

The image of “before” and “after” states both inside and around the park, also shows the magnitude of the intervention in this Athenian neighborhood: two new large trees were added to the existing ones, while a total of 250 perennial plants, blooming during most months of the year, have contributed to the upgrade of the aesthetic image. Vigorous flowering plants were used throughout the park and placed in bordered knolls, while a green layer of sugar canes was created at the back of the park, in an attempt to conceal the concrete wall.

Two rows of tall evergreen bushes were planted around the park: the outer bush includes oleanders and the inner bush includes angelicas. All the perimeter walls were painted, while the lighting was equipped with photovoltaic panels with the purpose of providing the greatest possible safety to visitors, as well as energy autonomy of the park. In addition, the irrigation system was completely renewed, just like the urban equipment, in order for visitors to be able to interact within a green, shaded and safe area.
