Lets go Athens

Pocket Park Pangrati

This is the third Pocket Park that was completed in Athens. In an abandoned space full of garbage and rubble, at the junction of Hellanikos and Polemonos streets, a green park was created for the entire neighborhood.

It is distinctive that this particular park was designed with the purpose of forming an ecosystem, which will contribute to the aesthetic and climatic upgrading of the wider area, to the sequestration of carbon dioxide and to the increase of biodiversity.

It is an area of 750 sq.m. with dense planting, in which more than 1.150 species of plants and trees were placed, including robinias, birches and native aromatic plants. The impressive number of different plants and their planting density contribute to the creation of an ecosystem with benefits for the neighborhood.

Design and construction solutions based on the principles of sustainability and the circular economy were implemented in this particular park. Most of the park’s structures have been made from recycled timber, such as railway sleepers, while a sustainable water drainage system was installed to enrich the aquifer and water the trees.

The lighting of the park is produced by autonomous photovoltaic panels which, with the aim of reducing light pollution, illuminate at 100% for the first hours, then for four hours at 80% and yield 25% until morning. Walkways, seats and bike racks were installed in the park, and a water supply was provided for visitors, as well as for the area’s birds and animals.
