Lets go Athens

Mount Lycabettus

Mount Lycabettus, with a height of 278 meters, is the highest hill in Athens. It is located close to the city center and offers a breathtaking panoramic view, from the Acropolis to the port of Piraeus throughout the day under good weather conditions. The hill has excellent morphological features, rich vegetation with tall pines, various types of trees and shrubs. It is suitable for nice excursions in nature, hiking on the narrow paths of the hill to the top, running, exercise, but mostly for relaxation. One version regarding its nameimplies that once wolves inhabited the hill.

There are two ways one can reach the top of the hill. Visitors who prefer to walk should be prepared for a rather challenging climb, through a winding path, with steps and flat stairs. The route requires goodphysical condition, however visitors are compensated by the constant change of the view and the rich green scenery, with small and large trees and bushes. Apart from the climb, elegant funiculars are also available to visitors.

Approximately in the middle of the Hill there is the LycabettusTheater. It includes 3000 seats, designed by the renowned Greek architect TakisZenettos and since 1998 it has been declared as aPreserved Modern Monument. Now one can visit it just to enjoy its architecture.

Two more places that one can see are the Holy Church of Agios Georgios, at the top of the Hill, and the Holy Church of Saints Isidore, which is literally located inside the bowels of the rocks.
