Itis named after the English politician and Prime Minister George Canning, whose statue still prevails today. Chalkokondyli streets from Patision and Kaningos streets from Stournara Street lead to the square.

Initially the square had a circular shape and was considered equal to Omonia Square. The homonymous district of Athens was developed around Kaningos Square. Over time, the wider area has been home to educational institutions and tutoring centers due to the concentration of universities, educational institutes and professional shops in the area from OmoniatoPatision Street, such as the National Technical University of Athens, the Athens University of Economics and Business, the Italian Institute, private colleges, Institutes of Vocational Education and others.

The square is very close to Omonia square. There are several shops offering coffee, food and snacks. Also Kaningos square serves as the beginning of the pedestrian street of the same name with many shops and benches, which visitors may choose for shopping.
