Lets go Athens

PocketPark – Neos Kosmos

The Athenian neighborhoods are gradually becoming more colorful, lively and with breaths of fresh air. The Municipality of Athens, utilizing the “Adopt Your City” program and with the valuable contribution of P&G, handed over the 9th pocket park to the residents of NeosKosmos, upgrading another part of the city, for the benefit of the neighborhood.

Under the supervision of the OrganizationEarth, an unused plot of 200 sq.m. at the junction ofArtemonos and Aetionos streets was transformed into a beautiful park, which residents and visitors to the area may now enjoy throughout the day. The importance of the project lays in the fact that this small green urban areacame to replace an abandoned space, which until now functioned as a point for illegal dumping of waste and vehicle parking. Today, the space has been completely reformed, creating a park with a transparent “path”, connectingArtemonos Street with the pedestrian walkway of Polykleous Street.

“The 9th pocket park is the dynamic continuation of a very important program launched by the Municipality of Athens, in an attempt to add color and quality of life to the neighborhoods of the city. Our allies include the private companies that wish to contribute to our effort to free up spaces and fill the city with green areas. “The neighborhoods of Athens continue to change little by little, every day”, as the Mayor of Athens, Kostas Bakoyannis, pointed out in a statement.

Based on the topography of the land, the new park was created on two levels and where four benches were placed. In total, 140 sq. m. were planted, creating a verdant environment dominated by 468 medium and low shade-loving shrubs. The trees that existed in the area – mainly Eucalyptus, varnish trees and carob trees – were preserved and after appropriate intervention, evenenhanced with new plantings. Their distinctive features include their resistance to shade, urban pollution, mechanics, but also water stress.

The new park is now an attraction for the residents of the neighborhood, while it is an ideal place for the implementation of environmental experiential educational programs, with the participation of students from the schools of the area.
