Lets go Athens

PocketPark Metaxourgeio-Kolonos

The second pocket park in Kolonos is one of those small green areas in the heart of the neighborhood, created in Athens, following the standards of cities that used these parks to change the appearance of entire areas, but have also positively affected the daily life of the residents .

Not surprisingly, scientists from all over the world studying climate change have provided warnings, pointing the way to pocket parks as an essential solution that changes the daily life of the city for the better in many areas.

Already in America as well as in Britain, pocket parks are considered tools against crime, isolation that prevails in densely populated cities and, most of all, tools for protecting the environment.

These practices are also adopted by Athens, which is launching the creation of model parks in many corners of the city, and in fact, at no cost to the Athenians. The park in Kolonos, as well as the park in Kypseli, were built with the costs assumed by companies that participated in the program of the Municipality of Athens “Adopt your city”, as part of their corporate social responsibility. This program has become ahabit for the city and allows agencies, institutions and companies to sponsor projects and similar interventions of the municipality.

The new pocket park is located at the junction of Kilkis and Alamanas streets, while the method and the materials used are of particular interest. The floor and sidewalk were made of special, environmentally friendly concrete, the seats are made of recycled wood, the densely planted evergreen and deciduous trees prevail, as well as an underground irrigation system for watering the plants.

The lighting is provided autonomously by an advanced technology photovoltaic system, which also includes a digital panel with information on temperature, humidity and other environmental parameters.

Athens, like many European capitals, is plagued by the lack of public-free space. The construction of the previous decades and the conditions that prevailed in the citysignificantly reduced public areas, even beyond the center in many neighborhoods.
