Lets go Athens

Koumoundourou Square

This square was originally designed by Klentze, forming a boundary between the old and the new city. Its original name was “Ludwig” Square in honor of King Ludwig of Bavaria, Otto’s father. Later it was called “Eleftherias” Square, but the name “Koumoundourou” has prevailed, in honor of Prime Minister Alexandros Koumoundouros, whose house was facing the square.

It is one of the most famous squares of the municipality and is located in the middle of one of the sides of the historical triangle, between Psyri and Metaxourgeio in the center of Athens, on Piraeus Street. It has a Metro and bus stop, with the square including a flat surface. A large part of the square is covered by soil with vegetation. It includes sloping surfaces, an old marble fountain from 1870 and an amphitheater. The Olympic Games of 1859 and the gymnastic events of the 2nd Olympiad were held here.
